Sumo Concepts is a start-up small business located in Knoxville, TN. We manufacture automated enclosures that rapidly deploy equipment using a vehicle as a base (i.e., public address systems or audio-visual systems). During our prototyping stage, we met with a representative of the TN-China Network and discovered a windfall of great information that fit our needs (specifically sourcing some of our parts from China). During a subsequent seminar sponsored by the TN-China Network in the summer of 2016, we met several brokers and business owners who are exporting and importing from China. I was amazed to learn of Tennessee’s placement in the United States for trade with China. The seminar was a great way to gain insight into the various import/export regulations and many other aspects of conducting business in China. The Director of the Network, Elizabeth Rowland, also introduced me to other East Tennessee-based entities that further advanced our prototype efforts.

I invented the Pin High Pro golf swing aid 5 years ago. After making a functional prototype, the next step was, and continues to be, finding improved components. Through Alibaba I have contacted companies regarding the purchase of a variety of components. However, this exploration through Alibaba took a lot of time and financial risk.
I met Elizabeth Rowland, Executive Director of TN-China Network (TNCN), in early 2015. She told me about how TNCN can help connect individuals with Chinese manufacturers for the purchase or manufacturing of parts. She connected me with Innovate Manufacturing, a company owned by Chinese and American businessmen and located in west Knox County, Tennessee. I toured the manufacturing plant and presented them with the wave spring and stainless steel flat spring I’m constantly sourcing. Innovate sent the springs off to their associate company in China and I had quotes on both springs within two weeks. Purchasing the springs from Innovate would eliminate worries of monetary transfer to another country, and would also provide the guarantee of Innovate that the parts purchased were what I expected them to be.
Having a product with multiple components requires constant searching for the best quality at the best price. Elizabeth and the TN-China Network are a spectacular local resource.
