    President Trump Blocks Foreign Acquisition by Chinese Firm

    Baker Donelson – Sept. 21, 2017 – “On September 13, President Trump blocked the $1.3 billion acquisition of U.S. microchip manufacturer Lattice Semiconductor Corp. (“Lattice”) by Chinese private equity firm Canyon Bridge Capital Partners Inc. (“Canyon Bridge”). The President’s decision to stop the planned deal was consistent with the recommendation issued by the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS), an interagency committee charged with reviewing foreign acquisitions to identify possible national security concerns.”

    “Along with his administration’s ‘America First’ agenda, aimed at keeping jobs in the U.S. and preventing ‘bad deals’ for American industry, President Trump’s aggressive rhetoric towards China suggests that his first CFIUS block of a Chinese acquisition may only be the first of many future anti-foreign investment actions.”

    Government Curbs Sink Investment in Property, Sports, Entertainment

    Caixin – Sep. 15, 2017 – “Chinese companies have made no investments overseas in the property, sports, or entertainment sectors this year, amid government curbs on ‘irrational’ spending, official data show.”

    “The [financial] outflows, which helped push the yuan 6.5% weaker against the dollar in 2016, unnerved regulators and prompted the government late last year to step up scrutiny of Chinese companies’ overseas mergers and acquisitions.

    “Nevertheless the government has remained supportive of investment in other sectors that it sees as beneficial to the country’s campaign to move up the industrial value-added chain, acquire technology, and grow the services sector.”

    Huhtamaki Buys International Paper’s Food Service Packaging Operations in China

    Packaging Business Review – Sept. 8, 2017 – “Finnish food packaging specialist Huhtamaki has completed the purchase of International Paper’s food service packaging operations in China.”

    “Headquartered in Tennessee, International Paper provides renewable fiber-based packaging, pulp and paper products.”

    Nissan to Sell its Electric Battery Business to GSR Firms

    Reuters – Aug. 8, 2017 – “Nissan Motor Co said on Tuesday it has agreed to sell its electric battery business to Chinese investment firm GSR Capital for an undisclosed sum.

    “The business to be sold to GSR includes battery plants in Tennessee, England and Japan, the Japanese automaker said in a statement.

    “Beijing is promoting electric vehicles to combat air pollution and help domestic carmakers leapfrog the combustion engine to build global auto brands, making battery and lithium producers attractive assets for Chinese firms.”

    Forbes – July 26, 2017 – “Founded in 2001 by billionaire Chen Bang, Aier Eye Company is hoping it can replicate overseas some of the success it’s had in China.”

    “We are first looking at rural areas in Tennessee. We are looking for rural areas with unmet needs. In the second stage, we will be looking at the rest of the country and taking a similar approach.”
